BARE NECESSITIES

In the modern way of living, a home office is an essential part of the household. The home office can function as a study where one can do their hobbies or a private place for each individual member of the household. It can be a small corner of the bedroom or separate room in the house. A home office is also useful for self-employed individuals and freelancers. However, there are essential requirements for one space to be called a home office.

1. Type of Work

Before setting up a home office, one has to identify what will be done in that private place and whether the space will be shared with other members of the household. Consider hobbies, current career or anything that can be done in a personal space. Freelancers should take a different route, considering the nature of the business dictates the overall set up for them.

2. Space and Location

After deciding and considering the things that can be done in the home office and/or the nature of a self-owned business, a location for the office can now be decided, and the space allocated for the office. If one has a wide range of hobbies, a larger space is required. Space and location are key to feel comfortable in the space chosen. Comfort helps in being productive at work.

3. Lighting

This element is a bit trickier and steers towards the technical side of design. Lighting is crucial for any kind of work an individual would be doing. For someone who works with computers, dim lighting or lights with diffusers are advisable to lessen eye strain.

On a different note, for someone who reads a lot or draws or drafts a lot, daylight lighting or strong light should be considered. However, for any workspace, natural light is still the best option of lighting which means the location of the desk should be beside or positioned near a window.

4. Furniture Selection

Having furniture that suits an individual affects the way an individual works and moves. The movement around the working space dictates the pieces that would be used. If the work requires someone to sit for long periods of time, the chair should have proper lumbar support. While for someone who has to stand up often, an open space layout is more advisable and a mid-back chair is sufficient. Also, storage pieces should be considered depending on what is required to be stored.

5. Personalize

The most flexible factor in setting up a home office. Putting in things that make your workspace your own can help in being productive at work. Family picture frames, speakers for music, indoor plants added lighting or even fidget spinners can be placed in the office space to make it feels like an impersonal, staid area and more like a space where you feel it is more personal.

Each individual has a different preference in setting up their work space. There are three major things to be considered in having a work space. It has to be first and foremost be functional to the user and it should assist the user in doing the tasks he/she needs to do. Next is that it should be comfortable and should not obstruct the workflow of the user. Lastly, it has to be aesthetically pleasing to the user.

Choosing the right furniture supplier can make the difference when it comes to the selection of the pieces for the home office. Choose a supplier with a wide range of options for pieces and materials to suit the individual user. Having a range of options can really help in pinpointing the right furniture for the space. It also helps to consult a designer for space planning and overall design of the office. The best kind of furniture suppliers are the ones that have both a wide set of options and someone that can guide in making the best decisions for one’s needs.
